Symbol standardization

I just returned from the 55th Annual confernce of the Society for Technical Communication in Philadelphia. Great time.

One interesting presentation and interesting concept was copresented by Caroline Wicks of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Joanna L. Woerner of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science.

They are proposing a universal set of symbols, in an effort to standardize. So far they have 1500, and are ready to double that amount. The cool thing is that you can get the graphics in Adobe Illustrator format, and make adjustments as needed. Acknowledgment of the source is requested but not required. You are required to register for a free account for download. An index file shows all available icons.

While most of the icons so far have to do with nature, I look forward to seeing how the project unfolds.

From the conference, you can review presentation materials or check out the conference proceedings.
